Gaube, Heinz
(1940–2022), trained initially as an optician before studying Islamic and Iranian Studies, art history, archaeology, and theology across Europe and the Middle East. He held professorships at Tübingen, NYU, and MIT, founded major research centers in Islamic numismatics and economic history, conducted extensive fieldwork from Iran to Yemen and Syria, and played a key role in the preservation and urban study of the old city of Aleppo.
